ULSTER FINAL MATHESON DEBATING MACE

This Saturday (14 January) four of our talented year 10 students are competing in the Ulster Final of the Matheson National Debating Mace. This prestigious event takes place at Queen’s University Belfast and consists of a workshop in the morning, followed by four rounds of debates leading up to a grand finale in the evening. Ellis Taylor, Leah Geddis, Lucy Knox and Amy White all proudly represent our school today, showcasing some of the many skills developed through the Debating Society at New-Bridge.

Mace Debating is an exciting and challenging style of debating, where students from different schools are paired together and strong bonds of friendship are formed. Students who participate in the competition develop their knowledge of controversial issues and world affairs, while enhancing their speech writing, public speaking and analytical thinking skills. The competition also helps develop confidence in its participants and prepares them for the Speaking and Listening element of the GCSE English Language exam (worth 20% overall).

We wish the team the very best of luck and Miss Gallagher looks forward to updating you all of their success through the school’s social media and the ‘Literacy News’ section on our school website.
